School Website Admin Team Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) Dear Parents/Guardians Updates on precautionary measures against INFLUENZA A (H1N1) 1. You would have heard about the global Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and Singapore moving into the Orange alert level. The symptoms of Influenza A (H1N1) in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal influenza. An early symptom is high fever, which is followed by cough, sore throat, runny nose, and sometimes breathlessness a few days later. 2. Twice-daily temperature-taking will commence when students return to school on Monday, 4 May 2009. Students above 12 years-old with temperatures 37.6 degree Celsius and above, and students 12 years and below with temperatures 37.9 degree Celsius and above will be asked to see a doctor and to stay at home until they have fully recovered. Temperature screening for all staff and visitors to schools will also be instituted. Information on school visitors, including the date and time of visit, personal particulars and contact number of visitors, will be recorded. This is to facilitate contact tracing when the need arises. We strongly encourage you to take your child’s temperature at home before sending him/her to school, so that if he/she is running a fever, you can take him/her to the doctor straight away. 3. Here is some basic information on how your children can best protect themselves from flu infection : a. Maintain a high standard of hygiene; b. Wash hands with soap and water before eating and after going to the toilet; c. Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. It is advisable to cough into a tissue, not into the hands, to avoid the spread of germs on the hands; d. Avoid touching eyes or nose as this can spread infection from hands to the upper respiratory system; e. Do not share eating utensils, towels, etc; and f. If your child is unwell, you should take him/her to see a doctor. He/she should stay at home and avoid contact with others as much as possible. 4. We will continue to keep you updated of new developments through our school website and through email. More information on Influenza A (H1N1) can be found at http://www.flu.gov.sg or http://www.moh.gov.sg. 5. To facilitate contact tracing if the need arises, you will be required to inform the school through the form teacher if: a. Your child has left Singapore in the past 7 days (27 April 09 to 3 May 09) b. Your child will be leaving Singapore between 4 May 09 to 29 May 09. 6. In view of the school needing to do visual screening every morning at the covered-play area, we would appreciate that parents do not enter the covered-play area. We encourage you to let your child walk into the school on his/her own from the school gates. Regards, Mr David Chan Vice-Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians CONDUCT OF TEMPERATURE-TAKING EXERCISE The twice-daily temperature-taking regime in schools was suspended in late July 2003, as part of nation-wide measures to step down control measures against SARS. Schools have continued to maintain vigilance by ensuring that processes are in place for the swift re-activation of temperature-taking measures as and when necessary. As part of the measures to maintain schools’ preparedness to resume the temperature-taking regime should there be a need to, there will be a thermometer check on 29 April 2009 (Wed). The actual temperature-taking exercise will be conducted on 30 Apr 2009 (Thu). We would like to seek your assistance in ensuring that your child brings his/her personal Oral Digital Thermometer (in good working condition) to school on each day that he/she reports to school. In the meantime, it is important to maintain high standards of personal hygiene (in school and at home) and we encourage the following good practices: * Do not share eating utensils. Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; * Wash hands with soap and water before eating and after going to the toilet; Thank you for your support and cooperation. Together, let us continue in our efforts to provide a healthy and safe environment for all in the school. Regards, Mr. David Chan Vice-Principal
